The big difference
For a number of years now it has been possible to produce 360 degree views of locations. This has traditionally been achieved by one of two methods. Either through the use of a stills camera fitted with an extremely wide angle lens so that a set of two 180 degree photos or even a single 360 degree photo is squeezed into a regularly shaped photo. Software is then used to "unsqueeze" the image and make it viewable. Alternatively, many regular photos can be taken and then software used to stitch these together into one large photo.
The main trouble with these techniques is that they try to use still photos to simulate movement around a room. The end result usually being a very distorted representation of the room with all of the flat / straight surfaces (e.g. walls, furniture, etc.) looking curved. This effect can mean that the 360 degree image of the room is not a true representation.
At Right Click Productions we do use high quality digital stills where appropriate. Additionally, for our Virtual Tours, we use digital video. We have developed software that allows the viewer to turn around through upto 360 degrees at each location but with far less of the distortion that is present with traditional methods. This is because we are using equipment that is designed to produce a moving image rather than trying to simulate it with a stills camera. [Compare with traditional]
Virtual Tours that let you Tour !
Our Virtual Tours actually let the user tour. Surprising as this may be, but traditionally the one thing that virtual tours have not allowed a user to do is to tour. This is because they have always been produced by creating a list of locations that could be viewed. The user could then jump to the next location, but with no way of knowing how each of these locations relate to each other. Our Virtual Tours, (as well as allowing the user to jump around from location to location), enable the user to walk from location to location and back again - watching video that shows them what they would see if they were actually there [See the difference]. This is achieved by means of digital video clips linking the locations together. We have developed a system whereby we can comprehensively video a location using high quality stabilised video equipment and the software that we have developed will then arrange this video and create the navigation to allow the user to tour.
